Justin Bieber just teased some wild alien-looking speakers

Justin Bieber just posted a number of eye-catching prototypes on Instagram, with confirmation that his fashion label SKYLRK is moving into audio. The teasers show a small lineup of speakers, big and small, plus a pair of over-ear headphones, all stamped with “SKYLRK AUDIO” graphics and a caption telling fans to stay tuned. So this is officially a thing now, even if we have no idea when they may be available for purchase.

If a Bieber-branded headphone feels familiar, that’s because it is. More than a decade ago, he slapped his name on a purple pair of JustBeats with Beats by Dre, back when every pop star was launching a headphone. The difference this time is that SKYLRK is his own label, not a licensing deal, which makes the audio push read less like a quick endorsement and more like a brand trying to grow into a full lifestyle thing alongside its clothes and shoes.

The speakers are the real showpiece here. They look like flying saucers: smooth, rounded discs that come in a range of sizes and a bunch of bold colors, such as a shiny coppery orange, each with a perforated grille up top and a row of touch controls along the front edge. The smallest of the bunch appears to have a built-in lanyard loop for carrying.

The headphones are the plainer half of the lineup: a fairly familiar over-ear design with chunky black earcups on a colored headband, with some less colorful finishes. At the very least, they look like they are trying to steer clear of the matte-black-and-aluminum look most audio brands are settling for right now.

Right now, there’s nothing else to go on. No drivers, no battery life, no noise canceling claims, no price, and no release date. SKYLRK Audio is firmly in teaser mode, so we can’t tell you how any of it should sound, only that it exists and that Bieber seems excited about it. We’ll be watching for details, and we’ll have plenty of questions about how it measures up when there’s actual hardware to test. For now, it’s a good-looking prototype, but then again, we’ve heard that one before.
