EarFun Clip 2 review: Big features, bright sound, budget price

EarFun has made a name for itself with some of the best budget-friendly wireless earbuds on the market, and the Clip 2 is its latest attempt to tap into the growing open-earbuds market – people who want to stay aware of their surroundings while listening to music. These clip-on style earbuds come packed with features such as LDAC and AI translation at a fraction of the price of the bigger names in this category. Are these the best value cufflinks for your ears?

What’s it like to use the EarFun Clip 2?

The EarFun Clip 2 is easy to wear and use, and surprisingly full-featured for the price. It does a lot without overcomplicating anything.

Design

The EarFun Clip 2 earbuds are small and lightweight, with a flexible band that wraps around your ear.

The EarFun Clip 2 is an open-ear earbud with an ear-clip design, built around an ultra-thin nickel-titanium frame wrapped in soft silicone. The frame bends open and closed to pinch around your ear, and it applies light enough pressure that you can wear the buds for extended sessions without discomfort. They’re lightweight and stay put — even shaking your head around won’t dislodge them. Each bud houses a 12mm dual-magnetic driver behind an elliptical sound port, which EarFun says is shaped to widen the soundstage. The whole package carries an IP55 rating, so it can withstand sweat and light rain.

The case is lightweight plastic — functional but nothing special. Controls come via a single physical button on the back side of each ear clip, and they’re easy to press without pushing the bud out of position. Single-, double-, and triple-presses handle playback and call functions. Overall, these are simple, lightweight, and comfortable clip-on earbuds that don’t overcomplicate the basics.

Features

The EarFun app packs a surprising amount into a budget pair of earbuds. There are four listening modes: Game mode reduces latency; Theater mode expands the soundstage (though it can’t be used alongside LDAC); Privacy mode lowers the volume to reduce sound leakage; and Game Sound Effects mode boosts in-game audio cues like footsteps and environmental effects.

The EQ options are extensive. You get a long list of presets covering bass boost, treble boost, bass reduction, treble reduction, vocal enhancement and attenuation, and a spread of genre-specific tunings. Beyond that, there’s a custom 10-band equalizer for manual adjustment. My personal favorite here is SoundSense, which lets you create an EQ preset tailored to a specific song you’re listening to, which you can then save to your device for later or share with others.

The app also includes AI translation (which requires an EarFun account to set up) and supports many major languages, including English, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. There’s also dual-device management, a low-power mode, and hearing health features such as maximum-volume limiters.

How does the EarFun Clip 2 connect?

You can control the earbuds via a button on the top of the backside.

The EarFun Clip 2 supports Bluetooth 6.0 and SBC and LDAC codecs, providing higher-resolution audio on compatible devices. It also offers dual-device multipoint connectivity for switching between two paired devices, and Google Fast Pair for quick pairing on Android. Notably, there’s no AAC codec listed, which is the preferred codec for iPhones. If you’re an iPhone user, you’ll be limited to SBC.

How long does the EarFun Clip 2’s battery last?

The EarFun Clip 2 lasted 10 hours and 46 minutes in our testing using the SBC codec. EarFun claims up to 40 hours of total battery life with the charging case. With LDAC enabled, that drops to 6 hours per charge and 22 hours total. Overall, that’s considerably higher than competitors’ clip-on earbuds, which cost more than twice as much. The case also supports wireless charging for added convenience.

Do the EarFun Clip 2 block out noise?

As an open-ear design, the EarFun Clip 2 doesn’t have active noise cancelation and isn’t designed to seal out your environment. Passive isolation is minimal by design — you’ll hear everything around you, which is the point for situational awareness during workouts, commuting on foot, or working in an office where you need to stay tuned in.

How do the EarFun Clip 2 sound?

Overall, the default tuning of the EarFun Clip 2 is very bright, with weak bass and excessive treble.

Can you use the EarFun Clip 2 for phone calls?

The EarFun Clip 2 uses a quad-mic setup with AI-enhanced environmental noise cancelation for calls. In ideal conditions, voices come through fine, but they don’t sound very natural. It can sound like the speaker is speaking through the other side of a wall, with occasional pops. Take a listen for yourself in our sample recordings below.

The noise-rejection algorithm does a decent job filtering out noisy environments, but it can be overly aggressive — sometimes suppressing the speaker’s voice along with the background noise, leaving the other end of the call muffled and hard to hear. Wind introduces its own issue: an odd echo effect on the speaker’s voice that crops up intermittently. The EarFun Clip 2 will get you through a quick call, but don’t expect it to replace a dedicated headset for regular phone use.

Should you buy the EarFun Clip 2?

The EarFun Clip 2 comes in a compact clip-on design.

At $79.99, the EarFun Clip 2 offers a lot for the money. You get LDAC, Bluetooth 6.0, multipoint, a feature-packed app with extensive EQ options, and solid battery life — all in a comfortable, lightweight open-ear design.

The main downsides are that the default tuning is very bright and definitely requires some EQ tweaking, so be ready to put in the work. Mic quality is also serviceable but unremarkable. But if you’re after a budget-friendly pair of clip-on earbuds for casual listening, podcasts, or staying aware on a run, the Clip 2 punches well above its price on features alone.
