- Spotify has launched a new Mixed playlist feature called Smart Reorder.
- This automatically rearranges songs based on their BPM and key signature.
- The feature is available to Premium subscribers in regions where Spotify Mix has launched.
Have you ever found it frustratingly time-consuming to customize your Spotify playlists? If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that the company has just rolled out a new feature called Smart Reorder specifically for this. Once enabled, Smart Reorder automatically rearranges songs by BPM and key signature, letting you focus more on track selection than transitions. Smart Reorder is available to Premium subscribers in regions where Spotify Mix has launched. This includes the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and others.
You can use Smart Reorder when you create a Mixed playlist or enable Mix on a standard playlist. Tap the ‘Edit’ button, wait for the playlist editing page to load, and press the new Smart Reorder tool at the bottom of the page. Afterwards, Spotify will automatically rearrange your playlist. It may be worth backing up your playlists before using the feature, in case you don’t like the result.
Smart Reorder works particularly well with new Mixed playlists. For example, if you’re not accustomed to playlist customization and find reordering a hassle, Smart Reorder takes the pressure off. But it also works well for readjusting your existing, manually reordered playlists. For example, it’s easy to lose inspiration when reordering a large playlist, and using Smart Reorder can offer transitions you might not have chosen.
Better still, Smart Reorder won’t edit your custom transitions. Instead, it provides the option to keep these tracks in their current order, only rearranging songs with ‘auto’ transitions. Smart Reorder can also completely overhaul your Mixed playlist with a new song order if you wish. This can be helpful if you’ve gotten bored with your current playlist but don’t want to spend time rearranging your songs from scratch.
Spotify claims that “premium users around the world have streamed over 220 million hours of their Mixed playlists” since launching Mix last year. This indicates that the feature is among the streaming platform’s most valued functionalities. Indeed, Spotify Mixed playlists followed shortly after Apple Music unveiled its AutoMix tool, which uses AI to match beats. However, many prefer Spotify Mixed because it lets you reorder songs more like a real DJ.
