Spotify Prompted Playlists promises more control over your algorithm.

TL;DR

  • Spotify has announced a new playlist-creation tool called Prompted Playlists.
  • This allows you to control your algorithm for the first time and refreshes daily or weekly.
  • The feature is currently available in New Zealand and will roll out globally.

Spotify has announced a new playlist-creation feature called Prompted Playlists. For the first time, this lets you control your algorithm by entering detailed prompts about what you want to hear. Spotify then curates a playlist and refreshes it daily or weekly by 6am local time, depending on your settings – just like Discover Weekly. The feature taps into ‘world knowledge’ and your entire Spotify listening history, from your first day to today, to generate a playlist.

Each song in the playlist will include descriptions and context that tell you the story behind the recommendation. If you need a little help, you can tap “ideas” to pick from pre-selected prompts. This could include things like “songs from artists who are headlining major tours right now.” There’s no limit on what you can input into the prompt box.

Prompted Playlists can be set to update daily or weekly.

In its announcements, Spotify’s co-president Gustav Söderström shared, “For the first time, your ideas, your logic, and your creativity can actually power the Spotify algorithm, directing how it thinks, adapts, and responds to you.” Prompted Playlists is available as a beta version to Premium members in New Zealand. There are currently no concrete details around when the feature will launch in other regions.
