Bose is doubling down on open-ear earbuds with the announcement of two new wearables: the all-new Bose Sport Open Earbuds and the flagship Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen). These new earbuds build on the foundation of the original Bose Ultra Open Earbuds and play into the recent popularity of clip-on earbuds, giving users more choice in this budding market.
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) bring notable upgrades in sound and design. Bose says its newly engineered drivers deliver deeper bass and increased volume, paired with a new Cinema Mode powered by TrueSpatial head-tracking for spatialized 3D audio. Voice calls receive AI-driven SpeechClarity voice isolation, while Auto Volume dynamically recalibrates output as ambient noise shifts around you.
Additional refinements include a beveled metallic cap, Snapdragon Sound with aptX Adaptive codec support, and an upright wireless charging case. Battery life reaches up to nine hours (five hours with Immersive Audio enabled), totaling 28.5 hours with the case, while a 10-minute quick charge yields two hours of playback.
On the other hand, the Bose Sport Open Earbuds feature a soft silicone C-arm cuff engineered to stay secure during high-impact movement, targeting runners and outdoor fitness enthusiasts. Carrying an IP54 rating for sweat, splash, and dust resistance, they swap capacitive pads for textured physical buttons for reliable mid-workout control.
These earbuds come with SpeechClarity call isolation, Auto Volume, and a wireless charging case featuring a translucent, textured lid for improved grip. Weighing 10g per earbud like the Ultra model, the Sport Open delivers up to seven hours of playback (29 hours total with the case), with a 10-minute top-up providing an hour of listening time.
On the software and connectivity front, both models run on Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint pairing across two devices, standard SBC and AAC codecs, and Google Fast Pair. The companion Bose app adds a 3-band adjustable EQ alongside customizable hardware shortcuts for Spotify Tap or voice assistants. Bose is also promising a post-launch firmware update to introduce Google Find Hub tracking, hands-free Alexa Plus support, and Apple Music shortcuts.
Pricing and availability
The flagship Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) will retail for $299 in Black and White Smoke, with limited-edition Cherry Chocolate, Olive Green, and Sky Pink colorways.
The Bose Sport Open Earbuds are priced at $199 in core Black and White Smoke finishes, as well as a limited-edition Eucalyptus Green.
Preorders for both wearables open on September 19, with general retail availability starting October 1.
