Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless vs Sennheiser HDB 630: It all comes down to taste

Sennheiser may not be a tech giant, but in the world of audio it’s a household name. When the company released a set of audiophile ANC headphones last year, many thought that the new headphones would be taking the place of the MOMENTUM 5 headphones that had not released, given the Sennheiser HDB 630’s similarity to the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless. Well, that wasn’t the case — and in fact, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless would release in mid-2026. So, with two products so similar on the market, which ones should you get? Which product wins when you pit the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless vs Sennheiser HDB 630? Let’s take a look.

What’s it like to use the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless compared to the Sennheiser HDB 630?

Because Sennheiser HDB 630 shares most of its design elements with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless’s predecessor, the user experience for both is remarkably similar. Both have wide and deep ear cups, both share a plastic friction rod band, and both have a virtually-identical yoke to hold the ear cup assemblies in place. Even the travel cases are extremely similar! Controls are identical — a mix of one power/Bluetooth button and touch gestures — and so is the app.

Though the headphones are very similar, it’s readily apparent that each is meant to appeal to a different kind of listener.

Where the headphones differ is the aesthetics, mainly. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless enjoys a redesign from the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless, with an exterior that’s more seamless than that of both the older headphones, and the Sennheiser HDB 630. The Sennheiser HDB 630, sharing most of its design with the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless, has slightly deeper ear cups than the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, with a metallic-colored band and leather accents instead of fabric.

Though both are comfortable, the Sennheiser HDB 630 has slightly deeper ear cup assemblies than the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless.

While both headphones are comfortable — I spent a couple weeks with each — there’s not really a definitively better form for everyone here. Some people will prefer the Sennheiser HDB 630 for its materials choices, and others may prefer the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. But complaints from either will likely be similar in fashion because these are extremely similar headphones. If you’re sensitive to weight, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless comes in at 291 grams, while the Sennheiser HDB 630 is a hefty 311 grams.

Does the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless or Sennheiser HDB 630 have more features?

In terms of features, neither set of headphones truly trumps the other. However, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless has a newer Bluetooth implementation, but at the cost of more basic versions of some of the features in the Sennheiser Smart Control app. For example, the Sennheiser HDB 630 has a five-filter parametric equalizer, while the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless has an 8-band slider. Where the Sennheiser HDB 630 comes with a dongle to force aptX compliance with just about any USB-C device: the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless does not.

Beyond that, many of the features are the exact same — which isn’t surprising given the headphones both use the same app. Both will allow you to adjust ANC performance, EQ presets, settings, sound zones, and transparency mode level. Though the Sennheiser HDB 630 wins this matchup, it’s not a huge gulf in value for most people.

How does the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless and Sennheiser HDB 630 connect?

A side-by-side photo showing the ports of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless and Sennheiser HDB 630.

The ports are identical for both headphones.

Both the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless and Sennheiser HDB 630 connect to sources over Bluetooth 5.4 and support SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX Adaptive families of codecs. Both support LE Audio as a part of the mandatory list of features for the version standard, but only the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is “Bluetooth 6.0 ready,” whatever that means for the future.

The BTD 700 dongle of the Sennheiser HDB 630 allows you to bypass your device’s Bluetooth and use dedicated hardware to guarantee best results.

However, the Sennheiser HDB 630 comes with a dongle (Sennheiser BTD700) that allows users to plug into any smartphone and enjoy listening over the aptX Adaptive family of codecs. This allows even iPhone users to bypass the limitation of using AAC. While the upgrade may not mean much to casual users, purists may appreciate the ability to toggle a higher-bitrate form of Bluetooth.

Is battery life better on the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless or Sennheiser HDB 630?

Battery life is absolutely absurd on both the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless and Sennheiser HDB 630 — and to put a period on that statement, we’re still testing the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless in our labs. We expect it to take some time over 50 hours just like the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless before it, and the HDB 630 as well. Even if one product technically “wins” on battery here eventually, the main differentiating factor between the two products is the removable battery.

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless has an easily-replaceable battery.

Because the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless has a user-removable battery and the Sennheiser HDB 630 does not, it means that the former will be able to have a much longer operational life than the latter. Should you run into the situation where you need a new cell, it’s much harder to preserve the Sennheiser HDB 630 than the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless.

Does the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless or Sennheiser HDB 630 block noise better?

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless cancels more noise than the Sennheiser HDB 630. However, the charts showing this are a bit misleading. I say that because while the Sennheiser HDB 630 does a better job physically blocking outside noise, the ANC is weaker than that of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. The latter has to work harder to get a similar overall level of noise attenuation. However, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless does offer better noise attenuation from 310Hz to 2kHz, which is where a bunch of annoying sounds live.

Because of where the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless does a better job than the Sennheiser HDB 630, it will seem as though the ANC is far better on the newer headphones, even though the overall attenuation is similar in many ways.

Does the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless sound better than the Sennheiser HDB 630?

As controversial as it may be for me to say, there had to be a reason for people to be tempted by the Sennheiser HDB 630 even a year after its release, and it does not surprise me at all that the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless does not sound quite as good to me. I know that many had hoped that the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless would be a less-expensive version of the Sennheiser HDB 630, but it’s just not the case.

Objective Measurements

Here is the biggest difference between the two headphones: how they measure. Though it’s debatable what any one listener may prefer, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless and Sennheiser HDB 630 take differing philosophies on what a “good tuning” is. For example, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless has a lot of energy in the bass and treble, but comparatively quieter mids. This is a pretty inoffensive consumer-oriented tuning that — while divergent from our tastes — is popular elsewhere. But it’s foolish to ignore measurements for opinion, and we have a lab to help us out here.

On the other hand, the Sennheiser HDB 630 offers a much more reasonable response that meets a more audiophile tuning. With the exception of a strange bump in emphasis between 1kHz and 1.2kHz, the measured response conforms closer to a better-received profile based on listener preference research. Highs aren’t too loud, nor is bass. This is preferable for critical listening and listening at home — but it’s also far easier to equalize to get the exact results you want.

I would strongly suggest you look to the full reviews of each product if you’re planning on tinkering with the EQ presets, as the adjustments for each will change the sound considerably. Because of the stock tunings of each headphone, the adjustments do not sound the same between them.

How would most people rate the sound from 1 to 5?

Because both products are headphones, we’re going to be limiting our pool of potential comparison devices to headphones in the Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Scores algorithm. Consequently, the scores will be much lower than you expect. Interestingly enough, untrained listeners would rate both headphones… identically. I mean really, you don’t get closer than this. But what’s notable here is that the Sennheiser HDB 630 offers better distortion performance, even if most normal people will feel like each set of headphones does similarly well. I take issue with this, as I believe the Sennheiser HDB 630 to sound far better for its tuning alone, but I suppose once you reach “good enough,” many people stop caring so much.

This chart shows the Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Scores for the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless in the Default Seat 2 mode. The Timbre score is 3.1, the Distortion score is 4.7, the Immersiveness score is 3.8, and the Overall score is 4.

High marks across the board are expected, but the distortion score is unusually high on the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless.

What do the Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Scores mean?

  • Timbre (MOS-T) represents how faithfully the headphones reproduce the frequency spectrum and temporal resolution (timing information).
  • Distortion (MOS-D) represents non-linearities and added noise: higher scores mean cleaner reproduction.
  • Immersiveness (MOS-I) represents perceived source width and positioning: how well virtual sound sources are defined in three-dimensional space.

This tracks with our experiences, as we find that strong bass is more popular with the general public, and a response that conforms better to established listener preference research tends to appeal to audiophiles more. Whether or not that’s just the sort of response they’ve trained themselves to like, that’s anyone’s guess.

TKTK

The Sennheiser HDB 630 has slightly better distortion presentatoin to untrained listeners, but similar scores overall.

That said, both of these products sound outstanding — just for different users. With both headphones scoring a 4 overall, our simulated panel of 200 untrained listeners would rate both headphones as “good,” though individuals should vary considerably. Nobody will be upset by either of these headphones’ performance.

Do the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless or Sennheiser HDB 630 have a better microphone?

While it’s tempting to crown a winner, microphone comparisons are the kind of thing you’re just going to have to do yourself if you want to make a purchasing decision. Thankfully, we record standardized samples here at SoundGuys, so you can make apples-to-apples comparisons in different situations.

What isn’t terribly subjective is the difference in wind noise rejection performance. You can hear below, but the newer headphones seem to handle noise removal a little better, despite the lower level that comes through. Just remember that your quality may vary from ours due to the speaker, your client, network, or other audio settings.

Should you get the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless or Sennheiser HDB 630?

A thoughtful man, listening to music with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless.

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless may be the more popular choice due to stronger bass, ANC. Also lower cost.

As most of the guts and design elements are very similar, it seems as though this one boils down to whether you want better sound quality or better ANC. Though the Sennheiser HDB 630 can be found anywhere from $50 to $100 more online, the recently-released Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is still sitting at its launch price of $399.95 at time of publish. If you want a bassier tuning and better ANC, it’s a no-brainer. However, if you’re not satisfied by the sound quality options of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, the Sennheiser HDB 630 is worth the extra money.
