Sony announced the new BRAVIA Theater Trio, a wireless home theater speaker system that aims to deliver Dolby Atmos surround sound without a traditional multi-speaker setup. According to Sony, the BRAVIA Theater Trio was developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment sound creators to better reproduce the intent behind movie soundtracks. The system uses dedicated left, center, and right channels to improve dialogue clarity and create a wider front soundstage. Sony says its 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology can also generate up to 24 “virtual” speakers to simulate a larger surround sound field throughout a room.

The BRAVIA Theater Trio supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced playback for compatible content. Sony also includes a USB-C calibration microphone that automatically tunes the system to a room. Users can expand the setup with optional rear speakers and subwoofers, including dual-subwoofer configurations for larger spaces. Sony is additionally introducing a feature called Direct Connect, which lets select BRAVIA TVs connect directly to compatible wireless rear speakers and subwoofers without requiring a soundbar.

The BRAVIA Theater Trio costs $2,199.99 USD / CA$2,799.99 and is available for pre-order through Sony, Amazon, Best Buy, and other authorized retailers. At that price, Sony is positioning the system against premium home theater setups from companies like Sonos and Samsung. While Sony promises a theater-like surround sound experience through its spatial audio processing and virtual speaker technology, we’ll need to put the BRAVIA Theater Trio through the full SoundGuys testing process before drawing conclusions about its performance.
