The 1000X The Collexion uses vegan leather earcups, while the AirPods Max 2 uses exposed aluminum earcups.
The Sony 1000X The Collexion and Apple AirPods Max 2 both feel undeniably premium, but they approach comfort and build very differently. Sony uses faux leather earcups and stainless steel hinges, while Apple sticks with aluminum earcups and its signature mesh headband design. Neither pair of headphones folds inward, so neither feels especially portable, though both take up roughly the same amount of space once packed into their carrying cases.
Apple also continues to use the same Smart Case design from the original AirPods Max, which offers minimal protection and doubles as the headphones’ low-power mode. Sony’s carrying case feels much more practical by comparison.
Neither pair of headphones carries an official IP rating, making them less ideal for gym use or sweaty workouts.
Both headphones offer spacious earcups that comfortably fit around the ears, though Apple’s magnetic ear cushions are much easier to remove and replace. The AirPods Max 2 are also significantly heavier. At nearly 386g, they weigh substantially more than the 320g 1000X The Collexion, and I noticed that extra weight during longer listening sessions. Apple’s stronger clamping force also makes the headphones feel tighter on the head, while The Collexion feels slightly more relaxed overall.

The Sony 1000X The Collexion and Apple AirPods Max 2 both pack plenty of premium features, but they focus on very different things. The Collexion offers a more customizable experience overall thanks to Sony’s Sound Connect app, which includes a 10-band EQ, adaptive ANC controls, DSEE upscaling, LDAC support, Multipoint pairing, and native Auracast support.
Personalized Volume and Conversation Awareness are nice additions, but aren’t must-haves.
The AirPods Max 2, meanwhile, leans heavily into Apple-exclusive ecosystem features powered by the H2 chip. Features like Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, Live Translation, and Voice Isolation work seamlessly across Apple devices, though most of them are unavailable on Android.
It’s also worth noting Apple still doesn’t give you any real EQ control, which makes Sony’s app feel far more versatile by comparison.
How do the Sony 1000X The Collexion and AirPods Max 2 connect?
The Sony 1000X The Collexion and Apple AirPods Max 2 differ quite a bit when it comes to connectivity. The Collexion offers SBC, AAC, and LDAC playback alongside Bluetooth 6.0, native Auracast support, and Multipoint pairing. The AirPods Max 2, meanwhile, uses Bluetooth 5.3 and only works with the SBC and AAC codecs.
Apple has the clear advantage for wired listening, though. The AirPods Max 2 supports digital audio over USB-C for lossless playback, allowing you to connect directly to compatible devices without needing an external DAC. The Collexion still relies entirely on a 3.5mm analog connection for wired audio, which feels surprisingly limited at this price.
The AirPods Max 2 also integrates much more tightly with Apple devices, offering automatic device switching, audio sharing, and deeper iPhone integration. That said, The Collexion is more flexible overall thanks to its broader codec support and better compatibility across Android and non-Apple devices.
Is battery life better on the Sony 1000X The Collexion or AirPods Max 2?
Battery life isn’t a major strength on either pair of headphones, especially considering how expensive they are. In our testing, the Sony 1000X The Collexion lasted about 26 hours on a charge, while the AirPods Max 2 reached roughly 21 hours with ANC enabled.
The AirPods Max 2 feel a bit more frustrating in daily use, though. Apple still relies on the Smart Case to trigger low-power mode instead of including a dedicated power button, and the shorter battery life feels harder to justify given the headphones’ larger size and heavier build.
Sony doesn’t exactly set the standard for battery life here either, but The Collexion still lasts longer overall and feels less annoying to manage day to day.
Do the Sony 1000X The Collexion or AirPods Max 2 block noise better?
The Apple AirPods Max 2 have a slight edge in overall ANC performance, but the difference between these headphones is surprisingly small given their premium pricing. In testing, the AirPods Max 2 attenuates roughly 89.4% of outside noise by perceived loudness, compared to roughly 86% on the 1000X The Collexion.
Apple’s ANC performs especially well in the mids, helping reduce nearby conversations, office noise, and other common distractions. The Collexion still performs extremely well, though, and remains among the best ANC headphones Sony has made. In my testing, the difference between the two headphones was noticeable, but not dramatic.
Fit also matters far more than these small percentage differences suggest. Getting a proper seal around your ears will have a much larger impact on perceived isolation than the roughly 3% gap between these headphones. Both still deliver flagship-tier ANC performance.

The Collexion offers much more sound customization through Sony’s 10-band EQ, while the AirPods Max 2 relies on Apple’s default tuning and loudness-dependent EQ system.
Objective Measurements
Compared to the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, both headphones emphasize bass and treble, though the Sony 1000X The Collexion places noticeably more emphasis on the mids. That helps vocals, guitars, and snare hits come through with slightly more presence.
Neither headphone has a perfectly smooth treble response, either. Both feature noticeable dips in the upper frequencies that can slightly reduce brilliance on cymbals and other high-frequency elements, though the exact presentation differs between the two.
The AirPods Max 2 also behaves differently depending on listening volume because of Apple’s loudness-dependent EQ system (LDEQ). At lower listening levels, the headphones increase bass response, while it becomes more restrained as volume increases. That means the AirPods Max 2 can sound fairly different depending on how loudly you listen, whereas The Collexion remains more consistent overall.
Ultimately, the Sony headphones give you far more control over the sound thanks to the excellent 10-band EQ in the Sound Connect app. With the AirPods Max 2, you’re largely stuck with Apple’s default tuning and LDEQ.
