Galaxy S27 Ultra may not feature a 3x telephoto camera

Samsung’s second Galaxy S Ultra phone, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, brought with it an additional camera over its predecessor, the Galaxy S20 Ultra — a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Since then, every Ultra model up to the latest Galaxy S26 Ultra has retained a 3x optical zoom telephoto camera. However, that could change with Samsung’s next non-foldable flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

According to well-known tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S27 Ultra may drop the dedicated 3x telephoto camera found on its predecessor altogether. Instead, the phone’s new 200MP primary sensor—expected to be different from the one used in the current model—will handle 3x zoom shots. The tipster also claims that Samsung is confident the new main camera can effectively replace the traditional 3x optical zoom lens.

It means that the Galaxy S27 Ultra may most likely have three cameras at the rear instead of four on the current model, the Galaxy S26 Ultra. A 200MP primary camera accompanied by periscope telephoto and ultrawide cameras, similar to Apple’s latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

A couple of days ago, we learned that the Galaxy S27’s rear camera setup might be at a different location on the back panel compared to its predecessors, in order to accommodate magnets for Qi2 charging. These changes, along with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro SoC, make it look like a big departure from the current model.
