Google adds Lyria 3 AI music generation to the Gemini app
- Google is integrating DeepMind’s Lyria 3 AI music generator into the Gemini app.
- This allows users to create 30-second tracks using just text, image, or video prompts.
- The feature is rolling out on the Gemini app in beta for users aged 18 and above in several territories.
Google DeepMind’s music generation tool, Lyria 3, is now available in the Gemini app. Launched as beta, users can create 30-second tracks using just text, image, and video prompts. For example, you can describe specific genres, moods, or memories, such as “Northern Soul track for my father to celebrate gigs we attended growing up.” The app will then create a song, with or without lyrics, based on your prompt. You can then supplement your request with photographs and video references.
In addition to creating songs, Gemini will add custom cover art generated by Nano Banana. The objective is to make it easier and more interactive when downloading and sharing your songs. Similarly, Lyria 3 is coming to YouTube’s Dream Track tool, allowing users to create custom AI soundtracks for Shorts.

Dream Track and Lyria were initially modelled to mimic the style and voice of famous artists. However, Google says that it has been “very mindful” of copyright when developing Lyria 3. In particular, it says the tool “is designed for original expression, not for mimicking existing artists.” Indeed, when prompted to make music based on a specific artist, Gemini will only generate a track that “shares a similar style or mood”. It may also use filters to check outputs against existing content.
Google’s Lyria feature has been available since 2023. However, it was only previously available via Google Cloud’s Vertex platform. This latest Gemini integration makes Lyria more accessible. Google states that, “The goal of these tracks isn’t to create a musical masterpiece, but rather to give you a fun, unique way to express yourself.” While late compared to offerings by TikTok and Microsoft’s Copilot, Lyria 3 is available globally now in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese, with plans to expand in the future. The feature is only available to those aged 18 or over in the Gemini app.
