How long does the Sony WF-1000XM6’s battery last? We tortured it to find out
So you’re looking at the brand-spankin’-new Sony WF-1000XM6 and thinking about buying. “Hold on,” you think to yourself, “what about the battery? Is it just gonna crap out on me after an hour or two?”
Well, that’s why nerds like us are here. We subjected the Sony WF-1000XM6 to our standardized battery test to see how well the earbuds fare against others in like conditions. Here’s what we found.
Sony WF-1000XM6 battery life under test
If you were to play back music on your Sony WF-1000XM6 with peaks at about 75dB SPL, you’d be likely to get around 9 hours and 41 minutes of playtime like we did in the lab. This figure is with the ANC enabled, and without spatial audio features or anything extra running. ou may find that this figure isn’t quite on the money for you, and that’s really fine — your use will affect the battery life of the earbuds somewhat depending on things like listening volume, temperature, age of the battery, what Bluetooth codec you use, etc. You can also observe battery life decaying over time if you don’t do much to take care of your wireless earbuds.
As far as competitors go, the Sony WF-1000XM6 fares quite well, though earbuds can only last so long on a single charge. Additionally, these figures are for single listening sessions without popping the earbuds back into the charging case, so keep that in mind. Here’s how the Sony WF-1000XM6 stacks up against its closest competition in the same test:
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 581 minutes
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 572 minutes
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 522 minutes
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: 465 minutes
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): 334 minutes
While the Sony WF-1000XM6 takes the top spot, it’s really splitting hairs. For example, the older WF-1000XM5 posted a battery life of only ~1.6% less than the newer earbuds, which is easily within the margin of what could simply be sample noise.
Additionally, if your listening sessions tend to only last a commute or handful of hours, that 5.5 hour battery life posted by the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) still suits your needs handily.
How long does the Sony WF-1000XM6’s battery last in the real world?
Of course, saying a product lasted so many minutes is a little tough to translate into the real world, so we did some of the math for you. Below is a rough calculation of how long the five products listed above should last in common situations based on their tested battery life. Your experience may vary.
Sony WF-1000XM6 performance in round-trip commutes
Given that you’ll be stowing your earbuds in the charging case, these figures should serve to illustrate mainly that the battery life of the Sony WF-1000XM6 and others like it are pretty much overkill for your use. But here’s how many round-trip commutes your earbuds could last without a recharge, or other use in-between.
15 minutes each way (30 min total)
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 19 commutes
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 19 commutes
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 17 commutes
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: 15 commutes
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): 11 commutes
30 minutes each way (60 min total)
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 9 commutes
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 9 commutes
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 8 commutes
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: 7 commutes
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): 5 commutes
1 hour each way (120 min total)
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 4 commutes
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 4 commutes
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 4 commutes
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: 3 commutes
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): 2 commutes
Sony WF-1000XM6 performance in a work week
Contextualize the performance in light of 4 hour (240 minute), 8 hour (480 minute), and 12 hour (720 minute) shifts. How many shifts can each product last through before needing a recharge?
If you’re blessed enough to get to listen to music at work, the equation changes quite a bit, given the longer periods you’ll go between recharges. Here’s how that looks if we split the battery life up into 4, 8, and 12 hour stretches.
4-hour shift (240 minutes)
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 2 shifts
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 2 shifts
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 2 shifts
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: 1 shift
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): 1 shift
8-hour shift (480 minutes)
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 1 shift
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 1 shift
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 1 shift
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: Not without a recharge
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): Not without a recharge
12-hour shift (720 minutes)
None of the products listed can last this long without a recharge.
Sony WF-1000XM6 performance on an airplane
Taking the Sony WF-1000XM6 on a flight should be fine, but remember that the length of your flight matters a lot. For example, while most earbuds are up to the task of most 6 hour flights, not all of them can handle the additional listening time in the airport ahead of time, nor will a long-haul or intercontinental flight be possible without having to recharge at least once.
Intracontinental (~6 hours)
- Sony WF-1000XM6: 1 flight plus pre-boarding
- Sony WF-1000XM5: 1 flight plus pre-boarding
- Apple AirPods Pro 3: 1 flight plus pre-boarding
- Sennheiser Momentum 4 True Wireless: 1 flight, no pre-boarding use
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): Not without a recharge
Intercontinental (12 hour flight)
None can survive this long without a recharge.
What do you think?
Of course, these are all rough figures, and most people will be recharging at least a little once every hour or two. But this should provide enough context for those looking for earbuds to suit their weird needs.
