Spotify has launched a myriad of updates to its app this past week. First, we saw page synchronization between audiobooks and physical books, then lyric translation features, and finally, in-app book purchases. Now, the company is allowing us to get closer to the meaning behind the music we love with a feature called ‘About the Song’. Spotify says that this latest addition provides context about what inspired our favorite songs.
‘About the Song’ displays short, swipeable story cards that explore the meaning behind the music you’re currently listening to. This is available in the Now Playing View and displays summarized stories from third-party sources to surface interesting details and behind-the-scenes moments.
Spotify has thousands of in-app music videos.
‘About the Song’ will be supported by selected tracks at launch. These will display information about the artist’s inspiration, quotes, and backstory. You can access Spotify’s new feature by following these steps:
- Open the Spotify mobile app, play a song, and open the Now Playing View.
- Scroll down to find the About the Song card on supported tracks.
- Swipe through to explore the stories behind the track.
Spotify says, “We believe that understanding the craft and context behind a song can deepen your connection to the music you love.” However, if the experience doesn’t live up to expectations, you can shape it by sharing feedback directly via the cards. This can be done by rating the cards with a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. Spotify will then presumably monitor feedback to improve its service.
‘About the Song’ is rolling out as a beta version on mobile (iOS and Android). It is available in English for Premium subscribers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.
