Bose SoundTouch speakers may be old, but they’re beloved.

TL;DR

  • Bose has extended cloud services for its SoundTouch speakers until May 6, 2026.
  • The company has also published its API for third-party app developers to add SoundTouch features.
  • Spotify Connect and AirPlay will continue to work beyond May’s deadline.

Bose announced in October 2025 that it would shut down its servers for its SoundTouch speakers. This is due to the company no longer being able to sustain the development and support of the cloud infrastructure that powers its older products. The change was originally due to take effect from February 18 and would have ended support for Spotify, TuneIn, Pandora, multi-room sync, and app control.

However, on January 7, 2026, Bose took the bold step of announcing that it would continue to operate its SoundTouch cloud services until May 6, 2026. On this date, the app will automatically update to a version that supports only local functions, independent of the cloud. This means that system settings and configuration, remote control features, and speaker groupings will continue to work indefinitely. Conversely, in-app presets and music browsing services in the SoundTouch app will cease to operate. You’ll also no longer receive security and software updates.

However, Bose’s updated press release clarifies that streaming music from your favourite apps directly via Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, and AUX will continue to work. Similarly, soundbars and home theatre systems can still use HDMI or optical connections for TV audio. Bose is also open-sourcing its API, allowing independent developers to create their own SoundTouch-compatible tools and features. This last step lets people continue using their speakers without bricking them and sends a strong message about its values.
