Major international conglomerate Universal Music Group has signed a new AI agreement with chip designer Nvidia. This promises to deliver AI music discovery, engagement, and creation tools. The joint venture brings together UMG’s extensive music library and Nvidia’s Audio Flamingo architecture to “enhance originality.”
The primary focus of the new NVIDIA and UMG deal is to extend the NVIDIA Music Flamingo model, transforming how fans discover music. This will reportedly allow listeners to find music “not just by genre or tempo, but by emotional narrative and cultural resonance.” According to UMG’s press release, Music Flamingo processes full-length tracks up to 15 minutes. It also captures and interprets harmony, structure, timbre, lyrics, and cultural context.
It remains unclear how the model will integrate into UMG’s catalog. Nevertheless, artists will supposedly be able to use it to analyze their music better and describe and share their songs with “unprecedented depth.” The announcement is similarly vague regarding its generative AI creation tools. However, it promises a “dedicated artist incubator” which brings together artists, songwriters, and producers to co-design and test new AI-powered tools. It is claimed that hands-on artist engagement will serve as a direct antidote to generic “AI slop.”
UMG’s statement stresses that its collaboration with Nvidia will pursue “responsible AI” with the purpose of collaborative research and development to advance “human music creation and rightsholder compensation.” However, these assurances come off the back of fully AI-generated tracks topping Billboard charts and going viral on social media. For example, AI artist Xania Monet charted a song at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B song sales chart in late 2025. The backlash to UMG’s and Nvidia’s latest AI deal is yet to be seen.
