When Titanfall came out all those years ago on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, it was an instant sensation due to its fast-paced gameplay and wall-running mechanics. The title instantly managed to garner a lot of fans and the sequel, Titanfall 2, sold quite well, despite being released a week after Battlefield 1.

Ever since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds came out, the battle royale genre has soared in popularity. The success of free-to-play games like Fortnite has prompted a lot of other developers to follow that model, and it looks like Respawn Entertainment — now owned by EA — is the latest studio to try out that business model.
There is a rumor floating around that Respawn is working on a free-to-play battle royale version of Titanfall which will be revealed next week. As with any such “leak,” take it with a grain of salt until we receive official confirmation. Considering that Respawn is currently finishing up Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the team might not have time to develop a free-to-play version of Titanfall.

We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more. If a free-to-play version exists, hopefully it won’t be pay-to-win. EA has already gotten into a lot of trouble with local and foreign governments over Star Wars Battlefront II, and it would be in their best interest to avoid another controversy. Would you play a free-to-play battle royale version of Titanfall? Let us know.
