MicroLED is a new type of display technology that Samsung first showed off almost two years ago at CES 2018 when it unveiled “The Wall”. The main advantage of a microLED display is that each individual pixel is made up of actual light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Other advantages are better viewing angles, brighter displays, and higher contrast.

A report from ETNews claims that Samsung might be close to dropping a large investment to begin mass production of microLED panels. The company is supposedly in the process of evaluating the equipment related to the production of microLED and It is reportedly in talks with partners to see how viable mass production of the new display technology would be.

“We are currently waiting on Samsung Electronics as it has yet to decide on the exact scale of production,” this is according to a representative of an equipment manufacturer. Samsung is yet to decide on the scale of the operation.

As per the report, Samsung is waiting until after CES 2020 before making a decision. Perhaps the company is going to evaluate the demand and competition before it forms a decision. The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas debuts a lot of technology from Samsung, particularly in-home appliances (smart home), and display technology through TVs.

Some industry experts opine that the production of TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) is still not at the level it needs to be for mass production of microLEDs. “Just as there have been rumors about mass-production of microLEDs last year and this year, chance that there will be a change next year is low,”

CES is right around the corner and we’re excited to hear about the next technological advancement in display manufacturing. MicroLED seems to be the next big thing after OLED, but it remains to be seen when we’ll see microLED dsplays on mass consumer products like TVs and eventually smartphones.
